Check Engine Light

Onboard Check Engine Diagnostics

If you're a Mazda driver based in or around Toronto, Ontario, you've come to the right place to better understand your vehicle. Your car's check engine light can appear on your dash for various reasons, and we're here to explain what it might mean and what you can do if it does. Allow us the pleasure of filling you in below, and feel free to contact us at Airport Mazda of Toronto for further details.

What is a Check Engine Light?

Your check engine light is a dashboard warning that can alert you to any number of issues with your Mazda. Rest assured, your check engine light's appearance could be due to something as simple as a loose gas cap, but it could also be a sign of an issue with your engine's electrical system or your emission control system, among other things.

How Long Can You Drive with a Check Engine Light On?

It depends. We always recommend visiting our Service Centre if your check engine light does appear, and since it's not always easy to tell why the light is on, try to drive as carefully as you can until you get your Mazda looked at. If the check engine light is flashing, it likely means your vehicle needs tending to immediately, in which case you should contact us as soon as possible to avoid further complications.

Will the Check Engine Light Reset Itself?

If your Mazda's only issue is a loose gas cap, the light should reset itself the next time you start it. Should your light stay on, our technicians can detect the issue using check engine light diagnostic codes on your next appointment. Once we've determined which of your Mazda's systems and components needs tending to, we'll conduct the necessary repairs, after which your check engine light should reset. Another way to reset the light is by disconnecting and reconnecting your Mazda's battery, but this isn't something we recommend, as it could either mask or create ongoing issues with your car.

Whatever maintenance or repairs your vehicle needs, our Parts and Service departments can help. Contact Airport Mazda of Toronto for a service appointment if your check engine light stays on or for any other issue with your Mazda. We'll be happy to get your car back in top shape.
