The Birth of Multiculturalism In Canada
The idea of multiculturalism in Canada dates back almost 100 years. However, it wasn't until the early 1970s that the concept became a part of our national identity. A bill passed by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to the House of Commons officially made Canada a bilingual land. The nation would formally respect the diversity of its citizen's languages, religions, and cultures. The main agenda was integration, to include every individual that came to Canada as one of our own.
Quietly over the next decades, official multiculturalism lost its superficial qualities and evolved into an ingrained collective value. Pierre Trudeau's single most crucial declaration when he introduced his new policy in 1971 may have been that no single culture could, or would, define Canada. Thus our multiculturalism flourished, and now we have a basin of so many vibrant languages, cultures, and ethnicities.
